I've often heard the argument that, as a science professor, it would be a good idea for students to study history instead of art. That seems to be, in a sense, an oversimplification of the point. This is a long-standing (even the most conservative) misconception. It's true in some schools, as well as in some businesses that try to keep students on site at specific times — not because it's convenient — but because the way we teach it — and how we present it — is a lot less fair.
In general, the best way to create a narrative, by providing all of that historical information and presenting that facts as easily as possible, is to build the student's understanding of the story in a way that is both easy and consistent.
By emphasizing, in the context of history, the meaning of each moment of history, it builds an atmosphere that makes for an interesting story. Students who have been exposed to modern scholarship should come around to such things more confidently, and so they might have a better handle on the material that's behind their new context.
